First of all, why would you want to build a cable head-end? Why not just take the regular cable signal from your cable provider and distribute that over RF around your organization? Well, for a lot of people “regular” cable (ie what you get without any kind of a receiver or set-top box) doesn’t include channels that are important to them. Regular cable might not include certain sports packages – like NFL Sunday Ticket or NBA League Pass on DirecTV – or other channels.

For example, say CSPAN is important to you. Well, here in Houston, TX, our local cable provider (Comcast) has been moving channels from the “analog” spectrum into the digital only spectrum and CSPAN has been one of the channels that’s been moved. So the only way to get CPSAN in Houston on Comcast is using a digital cable box (or a DTA – digital to analog – box). And if you want to distribute that channel around to various TVs in your office without a digital cable box at every TV, then you look at building your own regular cable head-end!

How do I build my own cable head-end?
So how do you create your own cable head-end? It’s surprisingly easy. Here’s a high-level overview of what your system will look like:
1. Your TV source is usually going to be either satellite (here in the US that means DirecTV or Dish) or digital cable. Depending on how many channels you’re modulating (‘n’ in the above diagram), you’ll need a corresponding number of receivers or set-top boxes from your provider. And if you’re using a satellite service like DirecTV, you’ll need a multi-port switch to drive all of those set-top boxes off of one satellite dish. A multi-port switch is a sort of splitter for satellite service.
2. Each set-top box is set to a particular channel on that TV source. Then that set-top box connects to it’s corresponding modulator via RCA video and audio cables. Generally speaking, analog modulators come in two varieties:
· "Channelized" modulators – this kind of modulator is hard-wired to modulate the audio/video passed into them to a particular channel # (ie to a particular frequency of the RF spectrum). You can’t change the channel number that it outputs on-the-fly.
· "Agile" modulators – with an Agile modulator, you can configure, on the fly, what channel you want it to output on. This provides more flexibility with the channels you can output on, but with some sacrifice of quality. Agile modulators are also more expensive (roughly twice as expensive) than "Channelized" modulators.
The typical recommendation, as I’ve heard it, is that most of your modulators can be “channelized” and then maybe you add a few “agile” modulators in case you need to modulate to some random channels later down the line.
3. And then each of the modulators connects to the combiner via RF and the combiner mashes all the channels together into one RF signal. There are two types of combiners – ones with amplifiers built-in (“active combiners”) and ones without amplifiers (“passive combiners”). Depending on how you’re distributing RF (the next step), an “active” combiner might save you the need for a dedicated RF amplifier on the output of the combiner.
4. Last but not least, you need to distribute your new cable signal throughout your organization. Designing an RF distribution system is a separate topic unto itself (discussion of splitters and taps, signal loss of distance, etc.), but for simple configurations, you just need to amplify the signal at the exit to the combiner. How much you need to amplify it depends on how many ways you’re splitting it and how long the distances are in your RF network.

Q&A: Connecting Digital Cable to TV Through RF Modulator | Soukacatv.com

"I need help hooking up my TV to digital cable, DVD and VCR. I have a RF modulator, but no instructions. My TV is an older set with one cable hook up - the modulator has room for 4 hookups. Please, any help would be greatly appreciated."

This is a problem a lot of people have - with or without a RF modulator. In this case, we'll attack the problem with the RF modulator in mind. After you connect everything you'll notice working with a RF modulator is just like working without one, except those with a RF modulator will have one device between their video signal and television.

As for the instructions, I am going to assume the DVD player is not a combo unit with the VCR, and that you want to record TV on your VCR. Step 4 will include connecting your DVD player, but if the DVD player is a combo unit with the VCR, just ignore Step 4 as DVD connection will be included in the VCR set up.

Step 1: Connect the coaxial cable coming out from the wall to your digital cable box in the ‘video in’ slot. It might also be labeled ‘antenna in’ or ‘cable in’.

Step 2: From the cable box, connect a coaxial or composite (yellow video cable) and stereo (red-white) RCA audio cables to the VIDEO IN terminal on your VCR.

Step 3: From the VCR, you will have to connect this to the RF Modulator using a coaxial cable from the VIDEO OUT on the VCR to one of the IN ports on your RF modulator.

Step 4: You can now connect your DVD player to the RF Modulator by using the yellow-red-white composite/RCA cables from the VIDEO OUT on the DVD player to another port on the RF modulator.

Step 5: From the RF modulator, connect this unit to your TV by using a coaxial cable. It will be from the VIDEO OUT on the RF modulator to the VIDEO IN or CABLE or ANTENNA IN port on your television.

This should be all you need to get started watching your digital television. In simple terms here is what you did:

VCR to RF modulator
DVD player to RF Modulator
RF modulator to TV

You will only be able to record what is on channel three because the digital cable will require you be on channel three. As for future connections to the RF modulator - just plug your viewing device into it and hit the button activating the video signal for the device you want to view. As long as it is connected to the television and the TV is on channel three, you should be able to see your video signal.

Why and how do hotels set up their TVs to start on a default channel when they are turned on? | Soukacatv.com

I don't have any first-hand technical knowledge of hotel TV systems but I can definitely take a guess on that.  As for the why, I'd say it's a combination of advertising and comfort.  

The advertising is natural.  Hotels make a lot of money off pay-per-view movies (most of it from the adult titles) so they want to bring you back to that point every time you turn on the TV.

I'm just guessing but I think there is some comfort for people visiting a hotel to know they're starting from the same point every time they turn on the TV.  Station numbers change between cities, and as long as a person knows they're starting at the same place every time they turn on the TV, then there is less guessing, and less discomfort.

Technically, modern hotel TV systems are a combination of satellite and proprietary DVR systems.  They filter the channels they allow and provide limited DVR or game play capability.  The same system that creates this functionality allows them to determine the channel displayed when the TV is turned on.  This is part of the reason the remote in a hotel room is proprietary.

With time, TV in a guest room has evolved from bulky sets to sleek LCD/Plasma. Most hotels invest in procuring high-definition TVs, but are either dependent on cable TV operators or install their own Analog TV head-end, which is popularly known as Master Antenna Television (MATV) or Cable TV (CATV). The above two issues of poor signal quality and 80-channel limitation can be resolved by converting TV signal transmission from analog to digital. Digital transmission can be done in two ways: 
· Using Digital Video Broadcast Cable (DVBC)
· Using Internet Protocol TV (IPTV)
What is DVBC?
In DVBC, TV channels are encoded and transmitted in digital form, in digital RF using encoders, Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM). The mode of transportation of DVBC signal is the same as RF signal. In the TV points, a DVBC set-top box is required to convert digital RF into AV, which is fed directly to the AV port of the TV. The guest can switch to AV mode and watch digital TV channels. The picture quality is improved and issues like ghost images and snow are resolved because in a digital mode either there will be a good quality picture or no picture at all. But in some cases, because of technical issues, pixelisation takes place resulting in garbled picture. There is a significant cost in converting feed from analog to digital for encoders, QAM’s, etc.
